Making tax digital
Making Tax Digital (MTD) is a government initiative designed to transform the UK tax system, making it more effective, efficient, and easier for taxpayers to get their tax right. The vision was first introduced in Budget 2015, with a roadmap published later that year setting out plans for a fully digital tax system.
Since then, HMRC has been gradually rolling out MTD in stages:
These changes mark a major shift in how businesses and individuals interact with HMRC and manage their tax affairs.
What does this actually mean?
If you’re a sole trader or landlord earning over the relevant threshold, from April 2026 you’ll need to:
Now is the time to prepare—don’t wait until the deadline! Transitioning early can make the change smoother and give you time to find the best system for your needs.
At Rosemary Bookkeeping, we work with a range of MTD-compatible software providers and can help you find the best solution for your business.
What are the advantages of going digital?
Switching to digital accounting brings many benefits beyond MTD compliance. With cloud-based bookkeeping software, you can:
What software can I use?
Most mainstream accounting packages will be Making Tax Digital compliant, Rosemary Bookkeeping work with most of them, if you already use a compliant accounting package, we can work with you to get your records ready and up to date or we can help you decide on which is the right package for your business. See our Software page for more detail about the accounting packages we work with on a regular basis.

Doing your bookkeeping online?
Using a cloud accounting/software system? How confident are you that your VAT return is right? Do you know when you can claim VAT? When you can’t?
Online VAT returns aren’t as straightforward as you think – can you answer these questions?
If you aren’t confident about the answers, then you shouldn’t be submitting your VAT Return to HMRC without it being checked by a reliable, knowledgeable bookkeeper.
Rosemary Bookkeeping can help – even if you are using online accounts software, let us check your VAT return before you send it off, you never know, you might find you are entitled to a VAT refund.

Efficient and professional
We have worked with the agency for a while now and find them to be very helpful and knowledgeable. They are flexible in the approach to tasks which fits with our business and changing priorities.
We would highly recommend their services.
Caroline has always been professional in her dealings with me. She is efficient and thorough in everything she does. I wouldn’t be without her!
My husband and I, through our 2 companies Automotive-Images and Gecko-Photography, have had the pleasure of working with Caroline for 3 ½ years. Caroline is clear and efficient and really has helped us put our business on the right track. Caroline’s systems are so much easier to understand than any we have used before and it is always a delight having our monthly catch ups and swapping of paperwork. I highly recommend working with Caroline.
Here at Elect Capital Allowances, we have been working with Caroline at Rosemary Bookkeeping for the last 4 years and are delighted with the professional and efficient bookkeeping service provided. Caroline’s attention to detail & gentle approach when we need reminding to provide our business records works well for us in our busy business environment.
If you are looking for help with bookkeeping, I can highly recommend Caroline O’Brien, she is amazing and what she does is bring calm and order to my cluttered basket of paperwork! She is flexible and organised and very efficient.
Thank you Caroline for taking the pressure off, allowing me more time to concentrate on making mosaics!
There is one good thing that should never be underestimated in business, and that is a good bookkeeper. I had a number of businesses that were in urgent need of structure in the accounts area. After asking a couple of successful local businesses and some good accountant friends. I was pointed in the direction of Caroline from Rosemary Bookkeeping. They have helped me navigate some really testing times in the last two years, from compensation claims to payment plans, closing of premises to the opening of new ones, the sale of a business and structure to enable me to implement 40% growth in the a current business. You don’t receive only the work you require, you receive responsive, talented professional advice from a company that actually cares about you as an individual, as well as your business. On a number of occasions O’ve been truly helped by the company’s dynamism and flexibility, they do what is best for you, to help you achieve the results you need to.
A new year’s THANK YOU, Caroline, for keeping me on track with my bookkeeping over the last year. For a freelance consultant like me – a ‘Jull-of-many-trades’ – having someone like you, who can tolerate dealing with the many standards of work and differing employers’ systems, such as I have to, without either having heart attack, or loosing patience with me, is a boom and a blessing. I still can’t believe I was lucky enough to find you, but I am very glad.
If you are seeking a committed, trustworthy bookkeeper then you need look no further than Caroline. Having worked with her for a significant number of years, I know that Caroline’s dedication to her work is second to none, while her people skills mean that she will be able to humanise the mysterious world of bookkeeping, ensuring that even the most number-fearing of clients understands everything they need to know about their accounts.
